Parent and carer guide to your child's operation

We want you and your child to feel prepared, supported and confident ahead of their hospital operation at Royal Surrey. This page includes guidance on what to bring, what to expect on the day and a short video from our team explaining the process.

On the day of your child's surgery

Your appointment letter will tell you when to arrive and where to go. If you have any questions, please use the contact details on your appointment letter. Once you are here:

  • One parent or carer will be able to stay with your child in pre-op as they meet the team and get ready for their operation.
  • One parent or carer may stay with your child in the anaesthetic room until they fall asleep.
  • After the operation, your child will go to the recovery area, where you’ll be reunited with them as soon as they are awake and comfortable.
