Volunteering

We have a large team of volunteers supporting us in nearly 40 areas within the hospital. We are very proud of the diversity and scope of the service we offer and we are also very grateful to the loyalty of the volunteers who make the service possible.

Our volunteers provide a very valuable service and we are always on the lookout for more volunteers to join our team. Our volunteers support the work carried out by professional staff and are all dedicated to creating a patient focused service.

How do volunteers make a difference?

  • Welcoming patients and visitors to the hospital
  • Accompanying patients and visitors to the clinics and wards
  • Helping with our trolley round to wards
  • Being part of the library service
  • Assisting patients and staff on the wards
  • Supporting patients and carers in The Fountain Centre (our cancer information drop-in centre)
  • Assisting with fundraising events
  • Visiting the patients as part of the Spiritual Care team
  • Supporting our Patient Experience Team
  • Giving clerical support
  • Helping with clinics and outpatients.

Our student volunteering programme

Our student volunteer programme

Our student volunteer scheme starts in the autumn and runs for six months.

The student volunteer scheme enables young people age 16 and over who are considering a health related career to experience the hospital environment, work alongside the team and help patients. Students are placed on a ward and make a commitment to come in one evening a week for six months. The focus is around the patients' evening meal and students have an opportunity to work in a ‘hands on way’ with patients.

For more information please call Chrissie Beard, Voluntary Services Manager, or Sarah Allen, Voluntary Services Co-ordinator, for a discussion about what opportunities are currently available.

Work experience

  • A comprehensive work shadow programme for students age 16 and over, living in the local area
  • The work shadow programme is popular and always oversubscribed; consequently we cannot guarantee a placement
  • For more information please call Chrissie Beard, Voluntary Services Manager or Sarah Allen, Voluntary Services Co-ordinator for a discussion about what opportunities are currently available.

A 'Taste of Medicine'

  • A one day programme of lectures, live links to theatre and interactive training for students age 16 plus interested in a career in medicine
  • The 'Taste of Medicine' programme is held once a year and places are limited
  • For more information please call Chrissie Beard, Voluntary Services Manager, or Sarah Allen, Voluntary Services Co-ordinator, for a discussion about what opportunities are currently available.
