Getting to Royal Surrey County Hospital

There are a number of options for you to choose from when travelling to Royal Surrey, but we would recommend using public transport wherever possible as on-site parking is very limited. If you do come by car, please allow extra time to park before your appointment.

If you need to use a wheelchair while you are here, you will find these just inside the main entrance. Please return them when you leave for other visitors and hospital users.

Travelling by rail

There are frequent train services from many of the surrounding areas to Guildford.

Guildford Train Station is on the main line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth, with Reading and Dorking connections.

A fast, frequent service is available with trains running approximately every 20 minutes.

From the train station it is possible to travel to the hospital either by bus or taxi.

Which bus to get

Safeguard Buses operate a regular service to Royal Surrey from Guildford Town Centre, via the train station, with buses running every seven or eight minutes.

You need to catch route five to the hospital and route four back into Guildford Town Centre.

The buses run at different frequencies at weekends and on public bank holidays. For more information about buses click here.

  • Stagecoach route 1 (via Surrey Sports Park / University of Surrey)
  • A return to Guildford picks up directly outside the hospital Main Entrance (Bus stop HT1).

Travelling by bicycle or motorcycle

There are covered stands and secure storage for bicycles and motorcycles at the front and rear of the hospital.

Travelling by car

We have a few car parks around our Guildford site for patients and visitors to park in, with the main car park directly outside the front of the hospital.

Disabled/blue badge parking is free.

Car parking tariffs are as follows:

1 Hour - £3.90 

2 Hour - £4.90 

3 Hour - £5.60 

4 Hour - £6.10

6 Hour - £7.10

24 Hours - £10.30

Weekly ticket - £21.70

Parking for cancer patients undergoing treatment, who attend the hospital more than three times per month, is also free. Patients who fall under this category will be issued a permit by the Cancer Centre. 

Travelling by taxi

The taxi ranks in Guildford are situated at the railway station, adjacent to the Friary shopping centre and at the top of the High Street.

Alternatively, you may wish to contact local firms.

There is a freephone link from the hospital to City Cabs. The telephones for this service are situated adjacent to the main entrance reception desk and in the Radiotherapy reception of the Cancer Centre.

Income support or low income

If you are on income support or low income you may qualify for reimbursement of some or all of the costs of traveling to your appointment, including the expenses of any escort if the hospital has recommended that you have one.

These costs can be claimed as a cash payment at the hospital Cashier's Office during opening hours of Monday-Friday, 9.00am-1.00pm provided you produce evidence of eligibility.

Details of eligibility can be found in the HC12 booklet available from the Cashier's Office.

Alternatively, outside these hours, HC5(T) forms will also be available from outside the Cashier's Office to reclaim costs via post.

Patient Transport Services

Local community transport providers 

Guildford Community Dial-a-Ride Transport – 01483 458055 Booking lines are open between 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 4.30pm on Friday. Suitable for patients travelling in their own wheelchairs.

Hoppa Hospital Dial-a-Ride Transport – 01428 681701 Booking lines are open between 8.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday – Transport Services provided to the Royal Surrey Hospital, Milford Hospital, Haslemere Hospital, Cranleigh Village Hospital and other healthcare facilities in the surrounding areas. Suitable for patients with their own wheelchairs or who require wheelchair assistance. Visit their website.

Surrey Connect Website – ‘On Demand Bus Service’, currently running in the West Guildford area which serves the Royal Surrey Hospital. The direct line for passengers is 01483 744807 and lines are open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Suitable for wheelchair passengers.

Driving Miss Daisy – Based in Guildford, the service specialises in the safe and careful transport of elderly or frail clients plus clients with disabilities. Both vehicles are wheelchair accessible (WAVs) and driving miss daisy companion drivers are certificated in disability awareness, safeguarding, emergency firstaid at work, wheelchair use, dementia care and have enhanced DBS checks. Ambulance Transport

If you have a medical condition and are unable to use public or community transport, you may be entitled to use the hospital transport service provided by one of our non-emergency ambulance providers.

To find out if you are eligible for the Patient Transport Service and to make a booking, please call the numbers below:

  • If you are registered with a GP in Surrey please call EMED Patient Care on 0300 131 2400.
  • If you are registered with a GP across the Thames Valley, Aldershot, Ascot, Ash, Bagshot, Bracknell, Camberley, Farnborough, Farnham, Fleet, Maidenhead, Slough, Windsor or Yateley, Please call South Central Ambulance Service on 0300 123 3235.
  • If you are registered with a GP in areas of Hampshire not listed above, please call South Central Ambulance Service, on 0300 100 0024.
  • If you are registered with a GP in Sussex – please call South Central Ambulance Service, on 0300 123 9841.

Help with travel costs

If you are on a low income or benefits, you may be entitled to reclaim your travel costs to and from hospital. You will need to provide proof that you are receiving one of the following income-related benefits and bring the proof of this for every claim you make:

Income Support

  • Income-Related Employment and Support Allowance.
  • Working Tax Credit.
  • Child Tax Credit.
  • Income Based Job Seeker’s Allowance.
  • Pension Credit Guaranteed Credit.
  • Universal Credit – can provide telephone proof of benefit.

Or, have a valid:

  • HC2 Certificate.
  • HC3 Certificate.
  • NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate.

To make a claim you will need to provide the following proof of entitlement:

  • Paper evidence of your entitlement, such as the award letter, tax credit exemption certificate or HC2/HC3 certificate.
  • A printout of the last Universal Credit payment, showing the dates.
  • Clinic letter or appointment card for attendance at the hospital.
  • Any/all tickets or receipts as proof of the cost.

Taxi fares will not be refunded unless you have a letter from your consultant or GP stating it is medically necessary for you to use this form of transport.

Should you not have the required paperwork to present at the counter then you will be unable to claim from the counter. You have the option to return within the timescale as below with the relevant paperwork OR complete an HC5 (T) postal request.

Please note that travel expenses must be claimed within three months of travel.
