Our charities

At Royal Surrey, we are incredibly grateful to all the charities we work with. Though we are funded by the NHS, the extra money we receive through charities plays a vital role in supporting our patients, staff and services.

From funding cutting-edge equipment to enhancing our patient facilities and investing in research that will improve care in the future, charitable donations make a real difference to the care we provide every day.

These advancements are only possible with your support. Whether you take part in a fundraising event, donate or become a volunteer, you can be sure your time, skills or money are put to good use.

Royal Surrey Charity

Royal Surrey Charity is our hospital’s official charity. We work closely together to help improve treatments, services and facilities for our patients and their loved ones.

From providing state-of-the-art equipment and redeveloping wards, to investing in staff development and innovative research, our patients are at the heart of every funding decision made.

Working collaboratively with our medical and support staff, Royal Surrey Charity funds projects that make the biggest impact on the 260,000 people we treat each year – from babies, to children and young adults, to older people.

Partner charities

We work with a number of partner charities who provide extra funding so we can continue to enhance patient care through research, training, and cutting-edge equipment and facilities.

BRIGHT Cancer Care

BRIGHT Cancer Care is based at our Cancer Centre in Guildford, raising funds for bowel, liver and pancreatic cancers. Money is used to support ground-breaking research that improves options and outcomes for patients with these cancers. With more than 25 years of support from the charity, many innovative treatments have evolved.

BRIGHT Cancer Care also helps with the purchase of equipment that can’t be funded by the NHS, including a Papillon radiotherapy machine and a surgical nanoknife, both of which support highly targeted, minimally invasive treatment.

GRACE

GRACE supports women living with gynaecological cancers across Surrey, West Sussex and Hampshire. They aim to make sure every woman diagnosed with gynae cancers doesn’t just live, but lives well. Services include:

  • Free one-to-one and facilitated peer-support counselling, available from diagnosis, recovery and beyond.
  • Facilitating peer-to-peer networks and events to connect women who may share similar lived experiences.
  • Raising awareness to promote early diagnosis.
  • Funding hospital surgical equipment.
  • Funding research to improve treatment, recovery and survival rates.

GUTS

GUTS aims to improve bowel cancer survival. In partnership with our trust, they run the GUTS Colon Cancer Family Clinic, screening people at a high risk of bowel cancer. They also fund extra equipment and facilities to improve care and outcomes for bowel cancer patients, and support our research activities.

GUTS is currently developing an information and support service for people at the end of bowel cancer treatment, helping them to address the physical, emotional and social issues they often face.

The Fountain Centre

The Fountain Centre is an independent charity based at our Guildford hospital site, which provides vital support for our cancer patients and their loved ones from diagnosis and beyond. Thanks to volunteers and donations, they provide emotional support, including counselling and coaching, to help patients and their families come to terms with a cancer diagnosis. They also offer a range of complementary therapies that greatly benefit our patients, such as acupuncture, massage and a wig service.

The Prostate Project

The Prostate Project is a volunteer-led charity based at the Stokes Centre for Urology at our Guildford site, a world-leading prostate cancer centre part funded by the charity. Their mission is to give men a better chance of beating prostate cancer. Since 1998, they have raised more than £11million. This has been shared between Royal Surrey County Hospital – for equipment such as the EchoLaser, testing via the Man Van and treatment – and the University of Surrey for research. If caught early, prostate cancer is among the most treatable forms of cancer.

Topic of Cancer

Topic of Cancer raises funds to support the Oncology Research Team at the University of Surrey, which is developing work on using the body's own immune system as a treatment for cancer, known as immunotherapy, with amazing results. They fund diagnostic machinery, consumables and contribute financially to the PhD students in the team, enabling them to advance their projects.

They also run a choir and fitness groups for people undergoing treatment or recovering from cancer, and, in partnership with another charity, provide a support group.
