Onslow Ward

Onslow Ward specialises in the care of patients who are undergoing investigations and treatment for various forms of cancer and haematology conditions. The team is made up of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

The ward has a total of 34 beds, with a number of side rooms. Side rooms are allocated to patients on the basis of their clinical need.

Who will be looking after me?

Each day you will be cared for by a team of nurses that will include registered nurses, healthcare assistants and student nurses. They are led by the oncology matron and two senior sisters who manage the ward.

During your stay you will be under the care of a consultant oncologist, who will supervise a team of doctors and who will be responsible for your treatment whilst you are in hospital.

You may see physiotherapists and occupational therapists. They can help if you are having mobility difficulties and ensure that you can manage daily activities.

Our Palliative and Enhanced Supportive Care team is made up of specialist doctors and nurses who work alongside the ward team offering support and symptom management. If your medical team feels it is appropriate they may become involved in your care.

The Fountain Centre therapists also visit Onslow Ward on a daily basis and are able to offer alternative therapies such as acupuncture, massage and talking therapy.

More information about the ward

Visiting

Onslow Ward is open for visiting daily from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm. Visiting outside of these times must be agreed in advance with the nurse in charge. Please note, children under 12 years of age are also only allowed to visit with permission from the nurse in charge.

Ward rounds

The oncology consultant overseeing the ward for the week will see all new patients. They will also regularly review patients, alongside other medical staff. Ward rounds and reviews take place at various times throughout the day. Please speak to the team looking after you if you would like any further information about your care or the care of a loved one.

Mealtimes

Your nutrition is very important and we aim to ensure patients have access to food that they can eat. Your carers or family are also welcome to bring in food for you. However, please note we do not have facilities to refrigerate food or heat it up.

Each day you will be given a menu and asked to choose something that you would like to eat. The ward staff will be happy to help you complete this form if needed. If you have any dietary requirements, they can also assist in directing you to the most appropriate menu choice.
