Clinic and ward areas at Royal Surrey County Hospital

Early Pregnancy Unit (EPAU): The Early Pregnancy Unit is a referral only service for woman who experience problems or complications early in pregnancy. Accessed from the main entrance, Level B at the Royal Surrey Hospital site. Specialist nurses, sonographers and doctors provide this early pregnancy care.

Viability scans can be performed up to 14 weeks gestation to:

· Confirm pregnancy and estimate a due date

· Exclude ectopic pregnancy

· Review any vaginal bleeding

· Check for multiple pregnancies

Planned Assessment Unit: The Planned Assessment Unit is situated on St. Catherine’s Ward on level G at the main hospital site. A dedicated midwifery team provide care for women who require additional monitoring for complications of pregnancy. This may be to check your blood pressure, take repeat blood tests or undertake monitoring of your baby’s heartbeat.

 

Antenatal Clinic Royal Surrey County Hospital: General antenatal clinics are run from Outpatients 1, level B at Royal Surrey County hospital in Guildford. You will attend clinics here if you live outside the maternity service locality or if you need to be seen by an obstetric doctor during your pregnancy. Your care is personalised and the doctors provide evidenced-based information to help you with decision-making and your choices.

Visiting Antenatal Clinic:

  • Partners are welcome to attend all ultrasound scans and antenatal appointments.
  • Please DO NOT bring children to any antenatal appointments or ultrasound scans. The clinics are busy environments with limited space and no facilities for children. There can occasionally be long waits for appointments or further tests that are required in the maternity unit. If you bring children with you, your appointment/scan may be rescheduled to support you to attend at another time without your children.

 

Antenatal Ward: If you require inpatient care during your pregnancy, you will be cared for on St Catherine’s Ward by both doctors and midwives. There are a number of conditions where it may be necessary for you to stay in hospital and your midwife and doctor will be give you detailed information on what to expect and on what choices you have regarding your care.

Visiting St Catherines Ward (Antenatal)

  • Partners are welcome to attend the Antenatal Ward anytime between 9am and 8pm .
  • Visitors, including siblings of the baby are welcome between 10am-12pm and 6pm-8pm (maximum 3 visitors per bed space).  
  • While 1 support person is welcome to stay overnight we recommend they go home and return if needed.

 

Delivery Suite:

Midwife led birthing suite - The Royal Surrey Birth Suite, Level G has two midwife-led birthing rooms that provide a home-from-home environment. The rooms are en-suite birthing pool rooms equipped to support active natural birthing. Here’s how to find your way to the unit from the main entrance of the hospital.

Consultant-led Birthing Suite - Our eight consultant led birthing rooms are equipped with beds that support active birthing positions and enhanced monitoring facilities. There is also a birthing pool on this unit for use during labour when enhanced monitoring or care is required.

Visiting Delivery Suite: 

  • Two birth partners are welcome at any time while women/ birthing people are on Delivery Suite - this is not dependent on the stage of labour.  
  • These must be the same two people, birth partners cannot swap at anytime.  
  • There are no visitors permitted on Delivery Suite, including your own children.  
  • Once you are transferred to the postnatal ward only one birth partner from Delivery Suite can come with you, this person cannot swap.  

 

Shere Ward: This is our post natal ward area. If you and/or your baby are not well enough or ready to be discharged home directly from the birthing suite you will transfer to Shere Ward. Midwives and maternity support workers will provide care for you and your baby with input from the obstetric and doctor team.

Visiting Shere Ward (Postnatal):

  • Partners are welcome on the postnatal ward between 9am-8pm. If you wish to stay overnight you will need to sign an overnight agreement.
  • Visitors, including siblings of the baby, can visit 10am -12pm and/or 6pm-8pm (maximum of 3 people at the bedside).
  • No children under the age of 12 are allowed on the ward unless they are the sibling of the baby.
  • Shere Suite visiting is between 10am-8pm, however the rules for children still apply.

Infant Feeding Room: This is a dedicated quiet space on the postnatal ward where you can receive personalised support from our feeding specialists and maternity support workers.

 

Community Based Maternity Hubs

Our six bespoke maternity hubs enable women to attend appointments in a purpose designed maternity clinic space. Midwife-led, women can access antenatal and post-natal care including specialist infant feeding support closer to home. These new maternity hubs have enabled us to expand the pioneering midwife continuity of care model. Cranleigh Maternity and Early Years hub: Based at Cranleigh hospital this new purpose built maternity facility is the community base for our Surrey Meadows midwife continuity of carer team. Women living in Cranleigh and surrounding villages can access streamlined antenatal and postnatal care 7 days a week and meet with specialist feeding support workers for advice and support. With a dedicated entrance, three clinic rooms and dedicated infant feeding room, this modern facility also hosts an obstetric and gynaecology clinic, paediatric clinics and midwifery led Birth Reflections clinic.

Farnham Maternity Hub: This maternity hub is located at the modern health suite of Farnham Memorial Hall. Our Surrey Orchards midwife continuity of carer team run a seven-day antenatal and postnatal care service for women living in the Farnham, Aldershot and Ash.

Godalming Maternity Hub: Located next to St Mark’s and All Saints Primary School, this is a purposely-refurbished maternity clinic space for women living in the Godalming area. Two midwifery teams are based here, Surrey Valleys continuity team and Bluebells case loading team. Support with feeding your baby is also available at this hub.

Central Guildford Maternity Hub: This maternity hub provides maternity care for up to 1,500 women a year. Opened in 2021, the building has been modernised to provide an exclusive space for maternity care with four clinic rooms and a dedicated area to meet with infant feeding support workers. Four midwifery teams run their clinics here, Surrey Rivers, Surrey Sunflowers, Surrey Roses and our Caseloading team Surrey Daisies. If you live in Guildford all of your routine antenatal and post-natal appointments will be at this hub. Women registered with GPs in Woking, Haslemere, Send, East Horsley, Shere and Cobham will attend here for their postnatal appointments.

Badgerswood Maternity Hub: Located next to Badgerswood Surgery, this is a purposely-refurbished maternity clinic space for women living in the Bordon, Alton, Liss and Petersfield area. This hub is base for our Forest Team, a dedicated team of midwives and infant feeding support workers providing antenatal and postnatal care 7 days a week.
