Caring for someone can be very rewarding but it can also be overwhelming, exhausting and challenging especially if you are juggling work commitments or travelling long distances. Looking after your own health and wellbeing is paramount for you and the person you are caring for.
Stay well — it can be easy to put the needs of the person you care for first, but it’s important that you take time to look after yourself and make sure that your physical and mental health and wellbeing doesn’t slip. Take time for yourself each day, drink plenty of fluid, eat a balanced healthy diet and get enough sleep.
Register as a carer with your GP — speak to your GP about being a carer and any impacts this is having on you or your family. GPs may also offer you additional health screening and can signpost you to further advice and support. Find out more about registering.
Talk to others and ask for help. You are not alone. Talking to professionals or other people in similar situations can provide emotional support as well as insightful practical advice. They can also signpost you to other organisations for further advice and support.
If you are a young carer or young adult carer, our hospital staff can support you within your role and signpost or refer you to Surrey Young Carers. Further information can be found on the Action for Carers website.
