Royal Surrey’s new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Milford Hospital was officially opened by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux, today Tuesday 30 September.

The state-of-the-art centre, which has been operational since the end of June, offers patients access to diagnostic tests closer to their homes, helping to identify illnesses such as heart disease and cancer at an earlier stage.

Equipped with two high-tech MRI scanners and the latest CT scanner, the centre provides a ‘one-stop shop’ for patients, offering an additional 11,000 MRI scans and 9,500 CT scans a year.

The scanners complement the services already available at Milford Hospital, which include X-ray, ultrasound, echocardiogram and phlebotomy.

Louise Stead, Group Chief Executive for Royal Surrey and Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, said: “We are delighted to celebrate the launch of our new Community Diagnostic Centre at Milford.

“I would like to thank all those who have been involved in this important project and worked so hard to see it to completion.

“The centre will help improve patient experience by reducing journey times and repeat visits for many, as well as alleviating pressure on our main hospital site at Guildford.

“By cutting the number and distance of patient journeys, the launch of the CDC in Milford will also contribute to our trust’s net zero aims of reducing carbon emissions and air pollution.”

After cutting the ribbon to officially open the Milford CDC, the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey joined staff on a tour of the centre. Accompanying him were Zöe Franklin, MP for Guildford, and Councillor Penny Rivers, the Mayor of Waverley.

As of April 2025, there are 169 operational CDC sites in England, which are hosted in a variety of settings including shopping centres, university campuses and football stadiums.
