National survey highlights Royal Surrey’s excellence in cancer patient care

Royal Surrey has received outstanding recognition for the quality of cancer care it provides, earning the highest patient satisfaction scores among all cancer care providers across Surrey and Sussex in the recent National Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2024.

The trust earned an outstanding rating of 9.1 out of 10 for patient care, based on feedback from over 64,000 patients across 131 NHS trusts in England, securing its position as the leading trust within Surrey and Sussex.

Designed to monitor national progress on cancer care and drive quality improvements, the survey looks at patient satisfaction across a range of issues including patients’ confidence in their care team, involvement in decision making, help to control pain, and delivery of clear information about what to do after leaving hospital.

Vicki Mumford, Professional Director of Nursing and Cancer, said: “I’m incredibly proud of our trust’s achievements and the continuing improvements we’ve made in the care and treatment we provide for our cancer patients.

“Each year, once the results from the survey are received, we work on our action plans for tackling areas that need more work and so it’s immensely rewarding to see the positive results reflected in our patients’ responses.

“Last year we scored above the national average in two areas, this year we’re above the national average in nine areas. This progress is an acknowledgement of the tremendous hard work and dedication of everyone in delivering Cancer Care. I would like to congratulate all those involved for these great results.”

She added: “The results are down to a huge team effort and demonstrate effective partnership working, the benefits of working with our cancer charity, the Fountain Centre, with the Royal Surrey Charity, with Macmillan and our community partners.”

Royal Surrey’s score of 9.1 out of 10 for patients’ care was up by two points from its rating in 2023. The trust also exceeded the national average in other areas, for example, when respondents were asked if they were able to get help from ward staff when needed, 81 per cent agreed compared to a national average expected score of 74 per cent. In answer to the question of whether enough privacy was given during delivery of diagnostic test results, 97 per cent said yes, compared to a national average expected score of 95 per cent, and 93 per cent of those responding felt teams worked well together at Royal Surrey, compared to 90 per cent nationally.
