Nurses caring for dementia patients are celebrating two successful years of providing dedicated support to families locally.
In partnership with Dementia UK, our Admiral Nurse Service offers specialist advice, education, and emotional support to people living with dementia and their carers.
Laura Plaku, Frailty Academy Project Manager, said: “We are incredibly proud of the work that we do. We visit families in their homes, working alongside them to manage the complex challenges that dementia can bring.
“The feedback over the past two years has been overwhelmingly positive. Families have told us how vital our support has been in helping them stay connected, make informed choices, and feel less alone.”
The Admiral Nurses help in many ways including offering skills and techniques to help families stay connected with their loved ones.
If someone is showing signs of fear or distress, they will work together to find ways to manage it. They provide advice on financial benefits and help connect families with support services.
If families are struggling to cope, the team help to secure the best possible care as well as listening and offering expert guidance.
The service is currently funded until December with hopes that it will continue.
We are hugely proud of the incredible work that our Admiral Nurses do here at Royal Surrey. It’s the heartfelt feedback from families that reminds us why this service matters so much.
Here are some comments from families:
“Your visit was much appreciated. It was very helpful to be able to talk openly about some tricky areas. Your patience and empathy were appreciated while us two old codgers fumbled about on the dance floor.”
“You managed to tackle some really challenging conversations with Mum and Dad in the loveliest way and I feel we made some real progress.”
“I have been meaning to contact you to express our thanks for your kindness and support over the past few weeks. We are so appreciative of your help navigating those final weeks.”
“The arrival of Karen in our lives in September 2024 has been the best thing to happen in the past six years. At last we have someone who understands everything, who doesn’t try to correct us or tell us it isn’t so bad, who is as passionate about the cause as we are and has lots of experience and knowledge to share.”
“Just a short note to thank you for your help with the Blue Badge. It has been approved… common sense at last!”
