Cardiology

The Cardiology department specialises in treating diseases and disorders of the heart.

It deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and heart rhythm disturbances. Subspecialties of the cardiology field include cardiac electrophysiology, echocardiography, interventional cardiology and cardiac imaging.

Service details

  • Our inpatient service includes a 24 bed ward (Merrow Ward) and a six bed coronary care unit.
  • Our outpatient service includes clinical measurements, echocardiograms, cardiac MRI, cardiac catheterisation laboratory and general clinics.
  • General clinics are a combination of face-to-face and telephone appointments, with some off-site clinics in Haslemere.  

About the condition

The service provides investigation and treatments for the following conditions:

  • Arrhythmias and palpitation
  • Breathlessness
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Chest pain, in patients not fulfilling the urgent chest pain service criteria
  • Diseases of the thoracic aorta
  • Heart failure
  • Ischaemic heart disease
  • Pericardial disease
  • Syncope
  • Valvular heart disease 

Who is eligible for the service?

Patients with reported cardiac symptoms aged 16 years and above.

How to access the service?

We take referrals from GPs via the national eRS, and from other consultants via letter or email to our medical secretary team. 

We also offer an advice and guidance service via the eRS system.

GPs are also able to refer straight to test for:

  • Echocardiograms
  • Holter Monitor/24 Hour Tape
  • 12-Lead ECG interpretation
