Waverley Public - Alex Byrne | Public Governors

I am very grateful for the opportunity to represent my local community as a Public Governor at the Royal Surrey. I moved to Farncombe with my wife in April 2023 having previously worked at the Royal Surrey as a Foundation Year 1 Doctor in 2015/16 fresh out of medical school, and again in 2020/21 as a Cardiology and Medical Registrar during the Coronavirus pandemic. We are also expecting our first child to be born in October 2024 at the Royal Surrey.

I am currently undertaking a PhD at University College London investigating the cardiovascular effects of chemotherapy which is expected to complete in October 2025 and in my work as a Cardiology Registrar I have a specialist interest in cardio-oncology and cardiac imaging.

The Royal Surrey holds a special place in my heart and has many things to be proud of, such as its excellent cancer centre and fantastic diabetes services. During my tenure I aim to advocate for the continuous improvement of compassionate and safe care for local residents and their families and look forward to my time working with other members of the board to ensure this can be delivered.
