Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialist branch of dentistry, concerned with the growth of the teeth, jaws and face. Orthodontic management aims to create a healthy, functioning bite.

Our orthodontics service undertakes:

  • Orthodontic outpatient diagnostic and treatment services.
  • Orthodontic treatment for complex cases graded Four and Five in the Index of Orthodontic Need.*
  • Orthognathic (corrective jaw surgery) clinics with maxillofacial surgeons for treatment of facial deformity.
  • Cleft clinics. The orthodontic unit is part of the South Thames cleft service. There are regular multidisciplinary cleft clinics when team members from the central cleft service visit Guildford. Orthodontic treatment is carried out at Royal Surrey.
  • Joint planning clinics with the consultant restorative dentist.
  • Joint planning clinics with paediatric dentists.
  • Teaching of orthodontic specialists, nurses and therapists.
  • Restorative care as part of the Head and Neck Cancer service.

*The IOTN is used to assess the need and eligibility of children under 18 years of age for NHS orthodontic treatment on dental health grounds.  Click here for more information
